Teaching Problem-Solving in Computer Science, Grades 1-12: Resources by Grade
Problem-solving is the thread that runs through every grade of computer science: breaking a problem into parts, writing steps, testing, and fixing what went wrong. A customer asked for every resource I have on it, so here is the full list, organized by grade, with Oklahoma OAS-CS and Texas TEKS editions marked.
The Four Skills These Resources Build
- Decomposition: splitting a large problem into smaller parts, from sorting a picture into pieces in Grade 1 to modular program design in Grade 8.
- Algorithms: writing, comparing and generalizing step-by-step solutions.
- Troubleshooting: working out why a device or system is not behaving, one cause at a time.
- Debugging and testing: finding and fixing mistakes in code, then checking the fix.
How the Skills Progress
Grades 1 and 2 start with concrete mistakes and everyday steps: what went wrong, and which step to fix. Grades 3 through 5 add planning, iteration, and comparing different solutions to the same problem. Grades 6 through 8 move to decomposing programs, systematic testing, and troubleshooting across connected systems. High school adds computational problem-solving as a full unit and systematic troubleshooting.

Which Edition to Use
The Oklahoma editions follow the OAS-CS standards. The Texas editions follow the TEKS for each grade, and the high school Texas units follow the Fundamentals of Computer Science course. If you teach in another state, either edition covers the skills; check the standard codes against your own before assigning.
