Teaching Data Collection, Charts and Analysis in Computer Science, Grades K-12: Resources by Grade

Data lessons answer a simple question: what is data, how do we collect it, and what can it tell us? This page collects every Sooner Standards resource on data collection, classification, charts and data privacy, organized by grade, with Oklahoma OAS-CS and Texas TEKS editions marked.

The Skills These Resources Build

  • Collecting data: from daily observations in Kindergarten and Grade 1 to numerical and non-numerical data in Grades 2 through 4.
  • Classifying data: telling numerical from non-numerical, and searching for it with keywords.
  • Charting and answering questions: turning data into a chart and the chart into an answer.
  • Where data lives and who can see it: storage, publishing and digital privacy.

How the Skills Progress

Kindergarten starts with what data is, and Grades 1 and 2 collect it every day. Grades 3 and 4 collect numerical data, classify it, search for it, and turn it into charts. By Grades 6 and 8 the questions shift to where data is stored, how it is typed, published, and turned into a finished product. High school looks at the data you do not see and digital privacy.

Which Edition to Use

The Oklahoma editions follow the OAS-CS standards. The Texas editions follow the TEKS for each grade, and the high school Texas units follow the Fundamentals of Computer Science course. If you teach in another state, either edition covers the skills; check the standard codes against your own before assigning.
