Teaching Isaac Asimov's The Last Question: STEM Meets Literature, Grades 8-12

Isaac Asimov once said "The Last Question" was his own personal favorite among everything he ever wrote — a story that spans literally trillions of years, following humanity's evolving relationship with a supercomputer as it's asked, again and again across cosmic time, whether entropy can ever be reversed. It's genuinely rare to find a text this short that gives English and science classrooms equally legitimate reasons to teach it.

Why This Story Belongs in Both Departments

"The Last Question" doesn't use science as decoration — its entire narrative structure depends on a real physics concept, entropy, and the story doesn't work if students don't understand what that concept actually means. That makes it a genuine cross-curricular text: a science teacher can use it to make thermodynamics memorable, and an English teacher can use it to teach how narrative structure and pacing build meaning across an enormous timescale.

Discussion Questions That Bridge Both Subjects

  • On entropy as narrative engine: The question "can entropy be reversed?" drives the entire story. Why is this a genuinely difficult scientific question, and how does the story's structure reflect that difficulty?
  • On the passage of time: The story jumps forward by increasingly vast spans of time — years, then centuries, then far longer. What does that accelerating structure do to the reader's sense of scale?
  • On computing evolution: Trace how Asimov imagines computing technology changing across the story. Which predictions feel prescient given how computing actually developed, and which don't?
  • On the ending: Without spoiling it here — how does the story's final answer function as both a scientific resolution and a philosophical or even spiritual statement?

Ask a student what they think the most important unanswered scientific question of our own time is — the one future generations might spend centuries trying to answer, the way the story's characters do. It's a good way to connect a story spanning trillions of years back to something immediate.
