Education should be one of the core’s of our lives. By definition, education is the process of receiving or giving systematic instruction. This is done through schools or universities. However, this provision extends beyond these institutions. If one thinks about it, we receive education through entertainment, social interactions with others, and through personal research.
One of the issues I am coming to realize is the lack of or holes in individual knowledge. While this concept is not new nor has been unaware, I just personally did not realize how much a lack existed. Knowledge differs from education. Knowledge is the facts, information, and skills acquired by an individual through their experience or education. Rather than memorizing facts, the individual understands the information. This is key.
Over time, the emphasis within our American school systems has converted from providing knowledge to memorizing facts. The purpose had changed from giving the students the necessary skills to passing the required tests. Doing so has damaged a generation of the public by taking their critical thinking skills, and ability to self-educate themselves.
A recent conversation put this into perspective. By removing the ability to understand the basics, it forms a domino effect to the following generation. The next generation (already here) has few resources to provide the means to learn self-education, or the drive to do so. I am not referring to the teacher within the brick and mortar attempting to educated an overpopulated classroom setting. While the parent desires to provide their child with a better outcome in the given society, they may not be able to do so, from the lack of provision.
Thus the question becomes, how to fill in these gaps or holes? Where does one even begin to identify these holes in order to correct the growing situation? How does one inject the desire to find valuable teachers through books?
These questions plague me today, as I attempt to find footing toward these answers.
