3 Classroom Tips for Teaching the Revolution as a Standards-Aligned Unit

1. Don't let "Patriots, Loyalists, and Neutrals" become a footnote. It's tempting to spend most of class time on the Declaration of Independence and treat colonial disunity as a quick aside. But 8.C.2.2 is its own standard for a reason — roughly a third of colonists opposed independence, and understanding why is essential to understanding the war itself as a civil conflict, not just a war against an external power.

2. Use the French and Indian War as the actual starting point, not a prologue. Standard 8.C.1.1 puts the pre-war political and economic climate first for a reason: the debt Britain incurred fighting that war is the direct cause of the taxation policies that follow. Skipping ahead to "No Taxation Without Representation" without establishing why Britain needed the revenue skips the causal chain the standard is testing.

3. Pair the Articles of Confederation resource with the wartime government angle, not just the post-war weaknesses angle. Most curricula treat the Articles purely as a failed peacetime government (Shays' Rebellion, no power to tax).
