Write to Remember
“If we write, it is more likely that we understand what we read, remember what we learn and that our thoughts make sense. ”
We see as far back as Benjamin Franklin’s time, it was understood the power of writing down our thoughts, clarifying our ideas, and sharing those ideas in a cohesive manner.
Yet, today, we may have many external tools allowing us this process, many do not. These tools can be as simple as pen and paper or as complex with electronic applications and means. Yet again, for the most part, there is a wide area of the population, missing or neglecting this technique. This is due primarily not being taught or simply not understanding the power this brings the individual.
I recall when America’s public education system dropped the requirement for cursive writing. That form of writing is now becoming loss. Already many of our youth not only cannot write cursive, but also cannot read cursive writing.
In a 2021 article, it was reported the organization producing SAT will scrap subject tests and optional essay section, regarding their college admission process. This is yet another indicator our youth having the inability to properly write an essay. The decline continues.
Originally, the three R’s (reading, writing and arithmetic) were the pillars of our education system. Yet, over the years, we continue to see a fall in these areas. This not only harms our youth, causing setback in education and thinking, but also strips them for a better life.
Politics and Social groups are pushing their agenda’s and viewed more important than critical thinking skills. This decline is not on a specific student subgroup, but effecting all children across the field.
Part of the ZettelKasten method is to write down our ideas, ruminate on them, then create a permanent note. These notes can then be joined with other notes to form a string of ideas, which ultimately allows you to have a personal memory bank.
I am in the process of creating this myself, and will explore the technique along with providing content, via videos, podcast and other avenues. Please join this podcast and keep up to date.
