The infamous detective Sherlock Holmes captivated the audience by solving the mystery through reasoning and deduction. The character, created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, used reasoning, critical thinking, and deduced fact from fiction. Reviewing all the possible evidence and scenarios, removing the noise, he with assistant Watson were able to find answers others could not.

One of the reasons this was accomplished is the ability to be led where the evidence took him. He did not have any preconceived biases, rather was open to any possibilities. This is trait lost today, with current culture.

An unfortunate by-product today isn’t preconceived bias, rather the individual expressing bias while being unaware. For them, they truly believe. When someone comes in with differing evidence, rather than reviewing, they dismiss with prejudice.

Adlai Stevenson’s quote reminds us we must be free to follow where that search may lead us, while pursuing knowledge. Similarly Holmes would say when we have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.

Both quotes emphasizes on pursuing knowledge without prejudice or bias. Those today desiring to follow this instruction are ostracized, ridiculed, and labeled.
