Nick Carraway tells us up front that he's "inclined to reserve all judgments" \u2014 and then spends the rest of The Great Gatsby<\/em> judging almost everyone he meets. That contradiction is the whole key to teaching this novel well: Nick is not a neutral camera. He's an unreliable narrator with his own blind spots, and getting students to notice where his account might be shaping (or distorting) what we see is what turns a surface reading of "rich people behaving badly" into real literary analysis.<\/p>\n Gatsby<\/em> is short, but it's dense \u2014 nearly every chapter introduces a new piece of symbolism (the green light, the eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg, the valley of ashes) that pays off later. A chapter-by-chapter approach lets students build vocabulary and comprehension incrementally instead of trying to absorb the whole symbolic architecture in one pass, which is where a lot of first-time readers get lost.<\/p>\n Ask a student this: is Gatsby's love for Daisy real, or is he actually in love with the idea of erasing the past and starting over?
