Teaching data collection methods in grades 11-12 (level 2) does not have to be complicated. Picture a UX researcher designing a usability study to generate evidence about how real users interact with a new app feature. That kind of thinking is exactly what Oklahoma's grades 11-12 (level 2) computer science standard L2.DA.CVT.02 asks students to practice \u2014 and it is very teachable with the right materials. Data Collection Methods: Misconceptions to Watch For<\/h2>\n
These are the wrong turns students reliably take with this standard \u2014 knowing them ahead of time is half the lesson plan. Each correction strategy below comes straight from the unit's teacher guide (the paragraph and activity references point into the unit itself).<\/p>\n
1. "Any claim can be tested with data as long as you collect enough of it."<\/strong><\/p>\n
Return to paragraph 2. Have students practice operationalizing three vague claims into measurable variables before ever discussing collection tools, so they see that an untestable claim stays untestable no matter how much data is collected.<\/p>\n
2. "A large sample size automatically means a data set is trustworthy."<\/strong><\/p>\n
Connect to paragraph 5's discussion of convenience sampling. Show that a large but biased sample, such as thousands of responses from only one social media platform, can still fail to represent the intended population.<\/p>\n
3. "Reliability and validity mean the same thing."<\/strong><\/p>\n
Use the sensor and survey-question examples from paragraph 7 side by side. Have students identify, for each example, whether the problem is that the instrument is inconsistent (reliability) or measuring the wrong thing (validity).<\/p>\n
4. "Finding a correlation between two variables proves that one causes the other."<\/strong><\/p>\n
Return to paragraph 8's caution. Ask students to brainstorm a third, hidden variable that could explain a correlation the class comes up with, to make the causation trap concrete.<\/p>\n

Bringing It Home<\/h2>\n
This topic is a natural one for families. One ten-minute activity to try: Together, pick a claim someone in the family has made recently ("traffic is always worse on Fridays," "this app uses the most data") and have your student describe how they would design a way to actually test it: what would they measure, from what group, and how would they make sure they weren't just collecting the easiest, most convenient information. There are no wrong answers \u2014 the goal is hearing their reasoning about fairness in data collection.<\/p>\n
