1. "Copyright protects an idea itself, not just how it is expressed."<\/strong><\/p>\n
Return to paragraph 2. Copyright protects the specific expression of an idea, such as exact code or exact wording \u2014 not the general idea behind it. Someone else can build a similar app using entirely different code without infringing.<\/p>\n
2. "A patent lasts forever once it is granted."<\/strong><\/p>\n
Point back to paragraph 3. A patent generally lasts about twenty years from filing, after which the invention enters the public domain and anyone may use it freely \u2014 this time limit is a deliberate part of the law's design.<\/p>\n
3. "Intellectual property law only helps innovation, with no real downside."<\/strong><\/p>\n
Revisit paragraph 6's discussion of patent thickets and litigation-focused companies. The same legal protection that rewards one inventor's investment can also block a dozen other inventors from entering the same market.<\/p>\n
4. "Open-source software has no legal protection at all."<\/strong><\/p>\n
Emphasize paragraph 7. Open-source licenses still use copyright; they grant broad permissions upfront instead of restricting them, which is different from having no protection.<\/p>\n
