Picture journalists naming their sources and quoting people accurately. That kind of thinking is exactly what Oklahoma's grade 5 computer science standard 5.IC.SLE.01 asks students to practice — and it is very teachable with the right materials. This post walks through what the standard means, the misconceptions students bring to it, and discussion starters you can use tomorrow, whether you teach in a classroom or at your kitchen table.

What Does Standard 5.IC.SLE.01 Actually Ask?

Observe intellectual property rights and give appropriate credit when using resources.
— Oklahoma Academic Standards for Computer Science (February 2023)

In plain language: Oklahoma's standard asks fifth graders to respect intellectual property rights and give appropriate credit when they use resources, such as images, articles, videos, music, or facts, in their projects.

In student-friendly terms, the learning target is: "I can observe intellectual property rights and give appropriate credit by citing the resources I use in my projects."

What Students Should Be Able to Do

I can explain what copyright and intellectual property mean.

I can tell the difference between honest resource use and plagiarism.

I can write a citation that names the author, the title, and where I found a resource.

I can find resources I am allowed to use and keep track of my sources.

Along the way, students pick up the working vocabulary of the topic: license, resource, citation, credit, plagiarism, source, author, permission, original, research, copyright, quote.

Citing Sources: Misconceptions to Watch For

These are the wrong turns students reliably take with this standard — knowing them ahead of time is half the lesson plan. Each correction strategy below comes straight from the unit's teacher guide (the paragraph and activity references point into the unit itself).

1. "Anything you find online is free to use however you want."

Paragraph 2: almost everything is protected by copyright the moment it is made. Teach students to look for Creative Commons, public domain, or royalty-free resources and to credit them.

2. "It is only plagiarism if you copy a lot."

Paragraph 3: the amount does not matter; copying even one sentence and hiding the source is plagiarism. Honesty about the source is what counts.

3. "If a resource is free to use, you do not need to give credit."

Paragraphs 4-5: most free resources (Creative Commons) still require credit, and even public domain works should be credited out of respect and honesty.

4. "You can write your citations from memory at the very end."

Paragraph 6: write down each source the moment you use it. Forgetting sources causes accidental plagiarism; tracking them as you research makes honesty easy.

Discussion Starters You Can Use Tomorrow

How would you feel if someone used your drawing or writing and claimed they made it? What does that tell you about why credit matters?

Where have you seen people give credit before, like movie credits or 'photo by' lines?

Why does naming your sources make people trust your project more?

Bringing It Home

This topic is a natural one for families. One ten-minute activity to try: Look together at a news article, a song, or a movie's credits and notice how the creators are named. Then help your child practice writing a simple citation for one resource they might use in a project, naming the author, the title, and where they found it. Talk about why crediting sources is both honest and respectful.

Where This Leads

Students who can observe intellectual property rights and give appropriate credit by citing the resources I use in my projects are building skills used every day in journalism, research and science, publishing, law and intellectual property, and media and the arts.

See the Unit in Action

Part of the Complete Grade 5 Computer Science Curriculum

This lesson covers just one standard.
