Only <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">one-third of high school<\/span> seniors are considered proficient readers, and only 4% of seniors reached the highest level of advanced proficiency in reading on a recent test. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fact, only 39% of teacher preparation programs across the nation are actually teaching the concepts and strategies of effective reading instruction.&nbsp;(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.teachtci.com\/the-decline-in-reading-proficiency-in-u-s-schools\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Source<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This review is prior to the COVID19 issue. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Help Your Kids in Reading<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One good thing, coming from forced stay-at-home, many parents have directly seen their kids&#8217; abilities, involving the school teachings. This is at least one saving grace. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With this ongoing public health crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic, parents are concerned to send their kids back to school, while the schools wrestle with reopening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cObviously, this is a challenging time for everybody, with choices that we haven\u2019t had before and ways of doing things that we haven\u2019t done before,\u201d <\/p><cite>said FCPS Superintendent Scott Brabrand.<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Personally, in my observation, all schools are struggling these uncharted waters. Their infrastructure is not setup for true online learning, coupled with teachers not prepared. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is a grave concern considering such low proficiency before this disruption. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Can A Parent Do?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I came across these suggestions. Be a mentor for your child.<\/li><li>Talk to your kids and use big words. Don&#8217;t be afraid to speak intelligently. <\/li><li>Read to your kids and have them read to you.<\/li><li>Have your kids tell you a story. <\/li><li>Teach phonics and be phonemic aware.<\/li><li>Promote writing. <\/li><li>Ask questions after your child reads.
