Those outside of the world of metrics and computers put little thought into it. However, all processes, actions, and movement provide information in a data set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By definition a data set is a collection of information organized as a stream of bytes in logical record and block structures for use by IBM mainframe operating systems. The record format is determined by data set organization, record format and other parameters. [<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Source (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.techopedia.com\/definition\/3348\/data-set-ibm-mainframe\" target=\"_blank\">Source<\/a>]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s a technical definition, but what does that really mean? Data sets are generally created by three methods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The individual creates the data set for a purpose.  <\/li><li>A collaborator created a data set with a question in mind.  <\/li><li> A collaborator created a data set in order to explore it. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From my experience, a data set is a group of information used to either find unknown information or to prove\/disprove a question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Data<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p> <br>If we have data, let\u2019s look at data. If all we have are opinions, let\u2019s go with mine.<br> \u2014Jim Barksdale <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Data is information. What we do with that information means a lot. However, since action is from data, we better understand the quality of that data. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are degrees of quality data and methods to define quality data. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Relevance &#8211; Data that is useful to support.<\/li><li>Timeliness &#8211; How quickly data is created.<\/li><li>Precision &#8211; The exactness of data.<\/li><li>Correctness &#8211; Data that is free of errors.<\/li><li>Completeness &#8211; Data that is compete relative.<\/li><li>Credibility &#8211; Data from reputable sources.<\/li><li>Traceability &#8211; Data that can be traced to it source. [<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Source (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/simplicable.com\/new\/data-quality\" target=\"_blank\">Source<\/a>]<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mattcole.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/dataquality-1024x593.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-142593\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With quality data combined to a data set, we can use this to create metrics. One simple example is school grades for a student. The data is the grades provided throughout the course. The combined grades form a data set. We can view this data set and pull out information of our student. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mattcole.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/DataSet_Grades.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-142592\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Which subject is the student excelling or failing in?<\/li><li>What is the overall grade point average in each class?<\/li><li>What is the likelihood the student will go to college or trade school, or neither?<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The more quality data provided, the more information we can gleam from. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore, it is imperative to gain as much quality data as possible, in order to portray accurate information. This is why I was shocked to learn how much missing data occurs with abortion data sets. You can read my article, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Finding Facts on Abortion (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/www.mattcole.us\/finding-facts-on-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\">Finding Facts on Abortion,<\/a> to see what I mean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> We just don&#8217;t want to focus to heavily on the metrics without acquiring our original goals. The main purpose of data sets, data quality, and metrics is to create an answer to a question or create an positive actionable item. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recently, I was curious to acquire quality data for the purpose of creating a metric on ABLE illegal alcohol seizures. I required information on amount of illegal busts. I had two reasons:  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>A question in mind (how many moonshine stills) and <\/li><li>explore the data. <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unfortunately, the data is hard to come by.
