Podcast: Guarding Your Lips
Those who guard their lips preserve their lives, but those who speak rashly will come to ruin.
The book of Proverbs is a well-known collection of ancient texts. Known as the Ketuvim or Writings, it consists of seven collections of wisdom materials from a variety of periods, after the days of Solomon.
It is most likely the oldest extant document of the Hebrew wisdom movement.
The Proverb conveying to guard your lips tells us to be careful what we say. Too often through gossip or anger, we say things we should not out loud. This causes pain, distrust, and inflicts those the words are against.
I find it interesting we have material from 700 B.C. warning us to hold our tongue. Mankind has always been known for lying, gossiping, speaking in anger, and here we are in the 21st century with the same issues.
The fact is, we can use our words to encourage, strengthen and propel others to their fullest potential.
Rather than gossiping, we can give praise. Rather than lie, we can speak the truth. Rather than belittle, we can encourage.
We have a lot of power in what we say and who we say it to.
The proverbs also tell us we preserve our lives, by guarding our lips. Meaning, we are benefiting by taking care of what we say, or do not say.
Those who speak rashly or without care and consideration come to ruin. It is warning consequences that are given by our words.
I would tell you today and every day, be wary of what you say, who you say too, and how you say it.
