What They Need not What They want
If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.
Hearing this same quote on a recent show, I was reminded how much it has been used. I have heard similar versions of this used over the years in my own working career. Dealing with Information Technology, we have the ability to create pretty much anything. While you can do that, you must also consider the cost versus time versus value. Simply having the ability to provide, does not necessitate the need to provide.
Taking this same concept regarding support. This support can be through varied avenues such as technology, monetary, emotionally, physically, or other methods. Many times the end-user or customer in Ford’s example has a need or want. If you ask the individual what do they want, they can only convey that need through their own personal lens. Depending on the individual that lens or worldview can be large or small. In other words, they may not know all the possibilities for the resolution.
This is where you come in and don’t provide what they want or expect, rather provide the best resolution. With your own experience, knowledge, and resources you can resolve the issue , provide the need, in a much more efficient manner. This provision is outside the confines of current existing methods. In other words, you are providing the need in a much higher capacity than fulfiling a simple want.
