Habitica – The fun Todo List via RPG Style

In the past I used a free application with the family called Habitica. The to do application motivates the user by applying power and other RPG style items when tasks get completed.

This made it more fun to complete provided tasks for the kids and myself. According to their slogan, ‘Gamify Your Life’, the site also provides the description below.

Habitica is a free habit-building and productivity app that treats your real life like a game. With in-game rewards and punishments to motivate you and a strong social network to inspire you, Habitica can help you achieve your goals to become healthy, hard-working, and happy.

The application was introduced to me by Thomas Frank years ago, when I was trying to find something to help motivate the kids. You can see his insight on this application on his site. Personally, I am a list maker and task doer. With the love of RPG, the application made it easy to introduce this format to the kids.

Thomas Frank used it during his college years as a method for motivation. If you don’t have time to check is site out, you can see his video covering  Habitica below.

The app worked for us for a while. However, as the kids grew older, and one moved away for college, we no longer use it. However, if you are looking for a method to help instill motivation and tasks, I do suggest giving it a go.

This productivity app is free and parents can set it up for their kids. Each of us chose a particular character, and worked together to battle the monsters. You can easily setup a rewards/punishment system. This way if a task is not met, the character gets hurt from it.

You can also lead parties outside of your family dynamic. Habitica comes with a social aspect allowing you to share experiences, tips, and communicate with others on productivity, ECT.

Providing a solid foundation on using to do list is vital for productivity. By applying lists it provides the benefits of

  • Dampening Anxiety
  • Provide us structure
  • Give us a plan we can stick to
  • Proof on our daily, weekly, or monthly accomplishments. ( Source ) .

Life coaches and experts recognize by brain dumping onto paper in an organized way helps release anxiety.  The brain dump journaling technique can help you to re-pattern your thoughts when you are stuck in negative thinking or self-sabotage.

There are many articles and books regarding methods of providing to-do lists. However,  if your looking for a fun way, then check out Habitica for you and the family.

If you have ever used this and want to provide some insight from your experiences, reach out and comment.  I would be curious to hear from you.
