Bringing Awareness
You cannot teach a person something he does not know; you can only bring what he does know to his awareness.
Awareness is the knowledge and understanding that something is happening or exists. While the individual may be aware, he or she may not be able to communicate it properly to others.
This causes anxiety and frustration, which can lead to self-doubt and time-loss. In order for us to convey our awareness, we must be able to think clearly and share this knowledge with others in the context they understand. David McCullough said, in order to think clearly we must be able to write well. Writing is thinking. This same idea harkens back to using the writing method to bring out what we are trying to communicate effectively, as well as thinking coherently.
Galileo said, you cannot teach a person something he does not know. This alludes to the individual requiring self-determination.
Within the development of personality psychology, in the 1940’s, the self-determination theory explained our actions are caused by two underlying reasons: a person freely wants to do something, or they are pressured to do something. This means we are pushed through internal or external forces.
Perhaps this is what Galileo meant, by the inability to teach someone something. The individual must have an internal desire to learn.
Bringing awareness to someone is pointing out the knowledge and understanding they already possess. Galileo may have meant to teach by bringing awareness, is to build confidence in the individual.
Through confidence, as the individual realizes his awareness, can then expand his personal teaching by pushing himself to learn.
